The Highboy by Alison Lurie6/10/2023 ![]() ![]() The supernatural elements are equally varied. They range from sunny Florida to the rain-drenched English Lake District and from India and Africa to small and college town America. The settings are contemporary rather than Gothic. ![]() ![]() “Women and Ghosts” doesn’t seem to be available in ebook form but there is a good audio version (ideal for ghost stories) and cheap paperbacks are easy to get hold of.Īs you would expect from the title, all of the stories feature female characters who go through some kind of supernatural experience. Professor Lurie is best known for her witty novels, such as the Pulitzer Prize-winning “Foreign Affairs”, but she also has the knack of writing unsettling short stories. Since her field of study has been Children’s Literature and Fairy Tales, she knows a thing or two about story-telling. I’m continuing Ghost Month by recommending “Women and Ghosts”, a collection of ten supernatural stories by American author and academic, Alison Lurie. ![]()

The White Darkness by David Grann6/10/2023 ![]() This attempt also failed, but Shackleton earned a reputation as a leader “revered for the way he had recruited and managed his men, coolly guiding them to safety.”įew people have been as moved by Shackleton’s exploits as Henry Worsley, a man with passion equal to that of his predecessor. He moved on to “the sole remaining prize - a trans-Antarctica crossing,” as David Grann writes in “The White Darkness.” In 1914, Shackleton and his team sailed northward in a schooner called Endurance and began their trek. His attempts failed, but that didn’t dampen his conquering spirit. In the early 20th century, he tried twice to become the first person to lead an expedition to the South Pole. ![]() ![]() There’s wanderlust, and then there’s the passion of an explorer. ![]() Fadensonnen paul celan6/10/2023 ![]() Finally I found if for sale in my local library! The same applies to 'Breathturn' which I had out of the library some years ago and then got out again. I liked some of the poems (I've never been big on Celan I prefer Georg Trakl of the German poets): but some were very good. Jack I did do a review of Celanie but couldn't place it anywhere. Von Schwelle zu Schwelle (From Threshold to Threshold] (1955).Nobody has yet provided us with a complete translation of the book, though there are substantial selections from it in the translations by Michael Hamburger (1988) and John Felstiner (2001), among others. The contents of Celan's first collection were reprinted here in a corrected form, together with much new material. It does, however, include his most famous poem, "Todesfuge." This, the first of Celan's collections, appeared in a form so riddled with errors and misprints that he disowned it soon after publication. That might seem like an odd thing to want to do, but there's certainly a strong argument that each of them is a coherent work in itself: It's now (almost) possible to read all of his complete published books of poetry in English translations, for instance. ![]() There are now some new ones which deserve celebration, however. ![]() Quite some time ago now (2011), I wrote a post, Collecting Paul Celan, which listed most of the salient books by and about Paul Celan then available in English. But Col, the son of a rival leader, is getting close enough to spot the killer inside her. ![]() When her father sends Frey in Rafi’s place as collateral in a precarious deal, she becomes the perfect impostor-as poised and charming as her sister. Her only purpose is to protect her sister, to sacrifice herself for Rafi if she must. So while Rafi was raised to be the perfect daughter, Frey has been taught to kill. Their powerful father has many enemies, and the world has grown dangerous as the old order falls apart. And even when Borogravia is losing, it is winning. You can’t be the greatest country in the world without having enemies, after all. The country also suffers from too much patriotism. The country follows the Book of Nuggan, which is actually more like a heavy binder that lists all the things that are considered Abominations unto Nuggan, such as chocolate, and the colour blue. We are in Borogravia, a location not visited before in the series, and a very warlike and religious country. It tells the story of Polly Perks, a girl who dresses up as a boy to enter the military, in search of her older brother. That element of satire became sharper too – more mocking, more serious in its intentions. ![]() Where the first dozen novels relied more on clever word play, his later novels found their humour in satirical situations.
